Shadow On The Balcony

Right after I graduated from college in 1992, I moved in with a buddy into a modern apartment building in a Chicago suburb, which was nine stories tall, and our apartment was on the fifth floor. It had a balcony with a terrific view, and was one of the features we liked best about the otherwise run-of-the-mill four room apartment.

One morning, not long after my buddy had left for work, I was in the bathroom getting ready myself for work, and had just gotten out of the shower and was drying off when I noticed a movement on the balcony through the blinds from the reflection in the mirror (I kept the door of the bathroom half open so it didn’t steam up too much). Thinking it must’ve been a pigeon, since we got a lot of them, I didn’t really think anything of it and continued to get ready. A couple moments later, I distinctly saw a large shadow move across the blinds from on the balcony, and my heart began to race rapidly. I had the radio in the bathroom playing fairly loudly, and turned it off, as well as the light in the bathroom, wrapped the towel around my waist and quietly made my way into the living room, which was light, but not overly light since the sun was still rising.

Eastern State Penitentiary

Eastern State Penitentiary has become a favorite among paranormal researchers.  There are many stories of ghostly encounters and strange noises up and down the cell block. It was built in 1829, and the imposing structure was originally designed to only hold about 250 inmates in solitary confinement. At the peak of its use, however, there were reports of as many as 1,700 prisoners  crammed into the cells. Like many other such places of high emotional stress, misery and death, the prison has become haunted by the tortured souls that died there.
Al Capone, the infamous mobster, was  incarcerated in Eastern State Penitentiary on illegal weapons possession in 1929. During his stay, it is said that Capone was tormented by the ghost of James Clark, one of the men Capone had murdered in the infamous St. Valentine’s Day massacre.

Other reported haunting activity includes:

  • A shadow-like figure that scoots quickly away when approached.
  • A figure that stands in the guard tower.
  • An evil cackling reportedly comes from cellblock 12.
  • In cellblock 6, another shadowy figure has been seen sliding down the wall.
  • Mysterious, ghostly faces are said to appear in cellblock 4.

The one drawback is that not all the cells are open to the public at this time.

Andrew’s Ghost

A lady by the name of Mrs. Andrews took this picture of her daughter Joyce’s grave site in Queensland, Australia around 1946. Her daughter died at the age of 17. After having the picture developed she was startled to see this child in the photo staring up at her and looking directly into the camera. Mrs. Andrews says that no children were in the area, so a double exposure was impossible. She says she did not recognize the baby at all. Of interest, there are graves of two baby girls nearby.
